Cricket 21-Jul-2009 1 2009 Ashes - First Test at Cardiff Australia and England play out an exciting draw in the first Test of the 2009 Ashes series at Cardiff.
Cricket 21-Jul-2009 2 2009 Ashes - Second Test at Lord's England dominates the second Test from the first ball and finishes Australia's run chase early on the last day to record their first win over Australia at Lord's in 75 years.
Cricket 23-Jul-2009 3 Use of technology in cricket I've never been in favour of using technology in cricket, but, given that it has been used for several years for run-outs and stumpings, as well as boundaries, I can't see any reason why it can't be used for every decision.
Cricket 31-Jul-2009 4 2009 Ashes - Third Test at Edgbaston - Australia's team changes I was stunned and amazed at the change to Australia's team for the Third Test at Edgbaston. There's no way that Shane Watson should have replaced Phillip Hughes. If a change was to be made Stuart Clark perhaps should have replaced Mitchell Johnson. Interesting that Graham Manou replaced Brad Haddin after the toss, raising the question of replacing injured players after the game has started.
Facilities in your home-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 1 Amenities or facilities The range of facilities or amenities in any campervan, motorhome, caravan or recreation vehicle can vary considerably from the very basic to the ultimate in luxurious comfort. Vans have a range of sleeping arrangements, cooking facilities as well as internal and external living conditions.
Facilities in your home-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 2 Where does your power come from? Many appliances and facilities in a campervan, motorhome, caravan or recreation vehicle require power of some sort, which varies depending on the number and type of appliances and whether you're staying in a caravan park or bush-camping (free-camping). Bottled gas is used for cooking and may also be used for other appliances such as a fridge or water heater. Electricity can be either from mains power when plugged in at a caravan park, or from on-board house batteries. There are a number of methods of recharging batteries, with solar power becoming increasingly popular.
Facilities in your home-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 3 Water -- fresh, grey, black Many appliances in your campervan, motorhome, caravan or recreation vehicle require fresh water, which can be provided via an internal tank or from a pressurised town-water connection. Then you need to dispose of your grey water (sullage) and black water (toilet waste).
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 1 The joys (or otherwise) of life in a campervan Over the few years that I've been travelling I've had a variety of problems with my slide-on campervan, or incidents have happened that may or may not be funny when I look back on them, but were definitely not funny at the time.
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 2 The truck won't start My slide-on campervan is jacked up, waiting for me to reverse the truck underneath. Why won't the truck start?
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 3 Remember to shut the fridge It's very important to make sure you close the fridge door properly when you pack up your campervan, motorhome, caravan or recreation vehicle.
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 4 It's raining inside the van I was sitting inside my campervan on a rainy day when water starting dripping onto my shoulder. As the water had to not only get through the roof, but also had to go through a cupboard that contained a number of electrical wires I thought I probably needed to investigate.
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 5 Why won't the door open? Coming back to the van after a walk, for some reason the door wouldn't open. The key turned but the door wouldn't open. I tried everything I could think of but the door still wouldn't open.
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 6 Red wine and olive oil As I was driving around I noticed red liquid pouring down the back of the van. What could it be? Where was it coming from?
It's funny now... 23-Jun-2009 7 Where is this water coming from? Water was leaking into my campervan from somewhere. Not just a few drops, there was a large pool of water on the floor. Each time I found and fixed the leak, the water started leaking from somewhere else.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 1 Deciding to travel around the country in a campervan I decided to give up my job and to travel around Australia in a campervan. But why? Why now? What do I do with my house and contents? What sort of van do I want? I needed to answer lots of questions before I could start travelling.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 2 Moving from a house into a home-on-wheels Having decided to move into a campervan, I had the options of selling my house or renting it out -- I decided to sell it. Then I had to sort through my furniture and other contents and decide what to take with me, what to sell or throw out and where to store the rest.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 3 Deciding on my first home-on-wheels Having decided I wanted to live in a home-on-wheels, I then needed to determine my travel and accommodation requirements, research the different types of vans available, and decide on the type of van that would best suit me. I eventually decided on a slide-on campervan and a 4WD.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 4 Finding and fitting-out my first slide-on campervan I decided that I wanted a slide-on campervan and 4WD, but finding a suitable van was difficult. I eventually found an empty shell of a van, which I then needed to modify for my use. I found a 4WD and had to get the two to connect.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 5 Lockable steel storage boxes My first slide-on campervan was designed to fit on the back of a ute and I was loading it onto a flat-tray 4WD. This meant there would be a lot of wasted space underneath the van where the sides of the ute would normally be. I had two options: rebuild the bottom section of the van or install storage boxes on the back of the truck.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 6 Installing solar power I needed to install a solar power system in my van. I researched the options on the Internet, determined my requirements and purchased the required items, thinking I'd be able to install everything myself. When I actually got the equipment I realised I had no idea what I was doing and had to find someone who could install it all in a few days.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 7 Getting the fridge to work I purchased a fridge for my new home-on-wheels in Canberra and had it installed before I left. I then drove to Melbourne to have it fixed.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 8 Installing a new stove I bought a new stove for my home-on-wheels in Melbourne, installed it in Maryborough, couldn't get it connected to the gas in Mount Gambier but eventually did in Adelaide, then connected the electronic ignition in Port Pirie.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 9 Installing the television and antenna I bought a television for my home-on-wheels in Canberra, an antenna in Adelaide, which I installed in Port Wakefield, then I installed the TV in Port Pirie and bought a booster for the antenna in Port Augusta.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 10 Installing a rear-vision camera I bought a rear-vision camera in Mount Gambier, had the video screen installed in Adelaide and installed the camera in Port Pirie. Having had the rear-vision camera for a few years now I'd never be without one when travelling in any sort of vehicle with restricted rear-vision. At first I thought it would only be a small assistance when reversing, but it's of significantly greater benefit than that -- it enables me to see what's happening behind me on the road.
My first slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 11 Installing stereos I had two stereos installed in my home-on-wheels -- one for the truck, which was installed by the supplier, and one for the van, which I installed myself.
My second slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 1 Why do I need a new van? My original plan was to travel for a year or so but I soon realised that twelve months was not going to be long enough and for extended travel I was going to need a new van.
My second slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 2 My second home-on-wheels -- a Trailblazers slide-on campervan Once I realised I needed a new van, I eventually decided on a brand new Trailblazers slide-on campervan.
My second slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 3 A new truck for my new slide-on After deciding to buy a new slide-on campervan I then needed to find a suitable vehicle to carry it -- after some investigation on the Internet and visiting a number of car yards, including spending five hours in one car yard (yes, I did buy from them!), I eventually decided on a Toyota Land Cruiser.
My second slide-on campervan 23-Jun-2009 4 Problems with the electrical system My new slide-on campervan has a solar power system. After installing an inverter, replacing the batteries, and replacing two dead power controllers, the electrical system now works well.
Overnight stops 23-Jun-2009 1 Where do you stay? Depending on the set-up of your home-on-wheels, you have the choice of staying in caravan parks or bush-camping (otherwise known as free-camping).
Overnight stops 23-Jun-2009 2 Free-camping (or bush-camping) Free-camping may also be known as bush-camping, but it does not always involve being out in the bush. Essentially it's staying anywhere other than a caravan park. The term free-camping is as much to do with freedom as it has to do with lack of expense -- most designated camping grounds, especially in National Parks, charge a small fee.
Overnight stops 30-Jul-2009 3 Staying in caravan parks Caravan parks provide powered or unpowered sites for all types of homes-on-wheels and tents. Many also have on-site cabins or vans and some have motel-style accommodation. The facilities and amenities provided in each park vary considerably.
Overnight stops 23-Jun-2009 4 Caravan parks charging a lower rate for a single person A number of caravan parks charge a lower rate for a single person. In appreciation I'm going to list all the ones that I find and encourage anyone travelling on their own to use these where possible.
Photography 28-Jun-2009 1 Build a professional and profitable photography-related web presence If you're a photographer, you can make money from your website, all you need are a plan and the right tools and information to help you implement that plan.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 1 Different types of recreation vehicles or homes-on-wheels More and more people are taking to the road in a vehicle that is also used as a mobile home, whether it be for a short holiday, a camping trip, an extended tour around the country or joining the growing numbers of grey nomads. These people need to find a suitable vehicle, which is a balance between something big enough to live in and small enough to drive around. The generic terms home-on-wheels or recreation vehicles cover the wide range of options available -- the names vary between countries and includes motorhomes, campervans, converted buses, motor caravans, caravans, fifth-wheelers, camper trailers, travel trailers, slide-on campervans and truck campers.
Types of homes-on-wheels 26-Jun-2009 2 Slide-on campervans or truck campers Slide-on campervans are my preferred type of van. A slide-on (known as a truck camper in North America) is a detachable motorhome body that sits in the bed of a ute or on the back of a flat-tray truck (or a pick-up in America). It has legs, or jacks, that lift the van so the truck can reverse under it.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 3 Campervans A campervan is a self-propelled vehicle with basic living/sleeping facilities, such as a bed that doubles as seating, a small refrigerator and some sort of cooking facilities. Generally suitable for 1-2 people who do most of their cooking and 'living' outside the van. They would be ideal for someone wanting to travel for a few weeks or a couple of months and who generally don't stay in one location for very long.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 4 Motorhomes or motor caravans A motorhome, known as a motor caravan in some parts of the world, is a recreational vehicle, a self-propelled structure built on a truck or bus chassis containing living accommodations. There appear to be a number of classes of motorhome and a wide range of sizes.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 5 Caravans or travel trailers Caravans, known as travel trailers in America, are by far the most popular type of home-on-wheels for those travelling in Australia, probably outnumbering motorhomes, campervans, slide-ons and camper trailers combined. They come in a range of sizes from very small to very large.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 6 Camper trailers A camper trailer is essentially a trailer with a canvas structure that folds out to form a tent-like structure. When set up the bed is located in the trailer part and the canvas structure forms an annex for storage or sitting under.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 7 Converted buses A converted bus or coach appears to be somewhere between a campervan and a motorhome. Any sized bus or coach is a suitable candidate for conversion, regardless of their former life as a carrier of school students or other passengers. Converting a bus to a home-on-wheels can take years or many people take the easy way out and buy one that's already been converted.
Types of homes-on-wheels 23-Jun-2009 8 Fifth-wheelers Fifth-wheelers are a relatively recent addition to the types of homes-on-wheels available in Australia. The body of the fifth-wheeler extends over the back of the tow vehicle and mounts onto a turntable, or 'wheel', which is the where the name comes from. These are preferred by some people over caravans as they are more stable and manoeuvrable.
